Set after the events of the Captive Prince trilogy, The Summer Palace is a story about Damen and Laurent during summer. It's an epilogue of sorts to the Captive Prince series.
The Summer Palace A Captive Prince Short Story Captive Prince Short Stories Book 2 edition by C S Pacat Literature Fiction eBooks
I love everything about this story. The first meeting in the gardens. The slow tour. The even slower and erotic details of the open air baths. And more, the subtle creeping in of the ghosts of their past...Laurant's griefs and dark deeds with Damen, as well as Damen's subtle tremors at the memories of abuse. These issues must be addressed. And they were without being heavy-handed, yet with complete and satisfying empathy and understanding between these two kings. My favorite line: The one that says Laurent's walls still went up sometimes but now Damen was always within them. (I'd quote this exact but don't have the story in front of me as I write this.
I only had one question. Why were they apart before meeting in the summer palace? Why was Laurent there first and Damen riding to meet him? Why did they not travel there together? This may look like three questions but it's really one. And it is not a criticism. Just wondering.
I truly loved this and the entire trilogy is, for me, worth reading over and over.

The Summer Palace A Captive Prince Short Story Captive Prince Short Stories Book 2 edition by C S Pacat Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I was a bit a scared when I started reading this that it would be unsatisfying but truly I don't think C.S. knows how to disappoint. This short story is incredibly sweet and heart-warming without failing to cover most if not all of the important bases I think us fans of the trilogy were most anxiously awaiting. Few epilogues I've ever read have been this fulfilling. I will be coming back to it often, no doubt.
Beautiful... everything I could want in an epilogue. I only wish it was longer! I could read about these two forever even if it was just fluffy domestic stuff with no plot... My babies are so in love!
"The Summer Palace" is really just the loveliest story about Damen and Laurent after the events in Kings Rising. There's a lot of reflection from Damen's POV about what role they played in each other's lives from the start of Captive Prince. This story is sweet, hilarious, and even a little bit sad. It's an epilogue, but it just leaves me wanting to read more shorts about Damen and Laurent leading their peaceful lives in blissful happiness. I wouldn't mind a short about something between Nikandros and Laurent that was mentioned in this book. And of course, all Damen can focus on is that Laurent wasn't in the proper attire, for it. I loved this, and can't wait to read the other short stories!
Well written just like the rest of the series and gives much feeling into the characters even more so. An amazing epilogue to an amazing series. This is certainly the perfect way to inform all of what happened and definitely what was occurring. This is the best work series I have read and love. I would certainly recommend this short stoy to all of pacat"s readers and lovers of the Captive Prince series. The characters of Damen and Laurent have truly left quite an amazing mark on all. Pacat knew what her readers wanted and she certainly delivered withh everything that certainly is perfection to her work. This is a short story I will never stop rereading. I am do happy to have been able to read it and fallen in love with I say one of the best love stories of all time in my life.
It was well worth the wait. Damen and Laurent are so sweet in this short. The waiting, the anticipation, everything fans have been waiting for was found in both characters. It felt like meeting and old friend.
The story was cute and developed Laurent's character more than ever. We finally see the soft side after all the struggles both characters went through. A laughing (sober) Laurent was unexpected but very much appreciated.
I'm so happy that they discussed their pasts although I do feel like the topic of Damen's scars was brushed over a bit too quickly. However, I do understand that going in depth into the atrocities committed in the last books would take much longer to resolve than in a short story, and it would ruin the tone/theme.
Overall, the Summer Palace was worth the wait. I'm anticipating the next set of shorts as well as any other novels the author will put out.
"That everything he knew was gone, but that this was here, in its place, this one bright thing."
The Summer Palace takes place after the end of the trilogy, and offers a little glimmer into what happened at the end of Kings Rising, as well as what would come to pass in the months after.
"For now it was the simple pleasure of Laurent beside him, their hands linked, with only sunlight and fresh air about them."
I was so eager when I saw that this was a short story specifically about Laurent and Damen, and I could not have been happier with this story... unless it had been 300 pages instead of 30. Or 3,000 pages. That would've been okay, too. I'm so helplessly in love with this ship and I can't imagine ever tiring of these two.
"Having made the decision to let Damen in, Laurent had not gone back on it. When the walls went up, it was with Damen inside them."
With how slow of a burn their romance was, and how difficult and broken Laurent could be, I was so relieved to find the tangible level of tenderness and love between the two of them. Fair warning this story is honestly just a gradual escalation through precious, steamy, and - at times - angsty flirting and smut, but if you shipped these two even half as hard as I do, you need this story in your life. ❤
"His smile widened. Laurent said, "What?"
"You were watching the road," said Damen."
The series and I have had a mixed relationship but I agreed with those who said it needed a proper end. This is like the final chapter that was missing. It works well as a stand alone, however. Laurent and Damen are given time to progress and space to interact. It isn't perfect but its good. Just the right end.
